However, her true goal was to pursue singing she felt launching a career in music wouldn't be possible in Kosovo. She got her parents to support the move because it would benefit her education. Kosovo's hip-hop-dominated music scene also introduced Lipa to new music.Īt 15, Lipa returned to London, where she moved in with a family friend. She was able to make friends, who told her about the war that had taken place in Kosovo while her family was in London. Though Lipa had grown up speaking Albanian at home, the move revealed that her language skills weren't good enough to thrive in school. They brought an 11-year-old Lipa and her younger siblings, sister Rina and brother Gjin, back to Kosovo. In 2006, Lipa's parents felt it was safe enough to return to their home country. She grew up listening to artists like Blondie, Prince, Bob Dylan, Sting and Pink. "My father was a musician and music was always played around the house so it just always kind of had a big impact on me," she shared in one interview. She had family connections to music - in addition to his dental studies, her father had been in a rock band. Lipa wrote her first song around the age of four. Though both were students (Lipa's father studied dentistry and her mother studied law), they worked in restaurants to make ends meet in their new home. Lipa's parents arrived in London as refugees. As Kosovar Albanians, they were targeted by Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic. In 1992, Lipa's parents, Dukagjin and Anessa, fled Pristina, Kosovo, to escape conflict in the former Yugoslavia. Early Life and Familyĭua Lipa was born in London, England, on August 22, 1995. Lipa has collaborated with numerous other artists, including Elton John, Miley Cyrus and Chris Martin. Lipa said her earlier music was" dark pop," but her successful second album Future Nostalgia had more uptempo tunes. (Her family had returned to Kosovo a few years earlier.) She used social media to promote herself before signing with a label. Lipa was so committed to pursuing a career in music that at 15 she went to live in London on her own. Her name "Dua" means love in Albanian she has no middle name. But who would expect her to sit there and sign 30,000 or whatever of these things!?! Not me.Singer-songwriter Dua Lipa is the daughter of Kosovar Albanians who were refugees in London in the 1990s. I wish the hand written note was actually hand written, but only for authenticity. I love the yellow vinyl and the tattoo transfer is a pretty cool idea. It also came with a Tattoo transfer replica of Dua’s actual ‘Future Nostalgia’ tattoo and one (of five possible) “Polaroid” images. The book contains many full page (12″) promotional photos of Dua Lipa, as well as an art print of the album cover with a thank you note from Dua Lipa on the back (looks hand written, but it’s printed). The record itself is in a sleeve within a giant hardcover book. The version I opted for came with what I believe to be 180 gram yellow vinyl. After listening to Future Nostaliga and loving several songs including Don’t Start Now, Good In Bed, Love Again, Cool, Physical, Hallucinate, Break My Heart and the title track Future Nostalgia, I had to see what release types there were and the one I found is particular cool.įuture Nostalgia released in several formats, including some different vinyl versions. Her voice isn’t insane and hard to sing to but rather familiar and fun. She is really good at writing about getting over breakup, turning a positive corner and being cool and confident. Her 2020 release has a real disco feel to it with some funky Bootsy Collins inspired bass slapping around all over the place. You shouldn’t expect any slow ballads on her albums and I love that. Dua Lipa is straight up a dance pop artist.
